New allergen labelling requirements for Irish food providers
The Food Information for Consumers (FIC) Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 comes into force on December 13th, 2014. From that date on, food providers must be equipped to provide their customers with information regarding the allergens contained in all their food.
Under existing EU law, a total of 14 specified food allergens must be declared on the packaging of prepacked foods and beverages. This requirement will now be extended to include all food and beverages sold to the public, necessitating non-prepacked or loose food and beverages to be appropriately labelled. As a result food businesses such as restaurants, hotels, bars, takeaways, cafes, canteens, healthcare and childcare facilities, and market stalls will now have to declare the presence of these allergens in their food and drink. So called 'distance sellers' delivering food services to the public via phone or internet sales will have to comply similarly.
