Harriette Lynch, Director and Consultant Dietitian of healthpro: Nutrition and Exercise Specialists spoke with Sean Moncrieff of Newstalk today about healthpro's "label me up campaign". Harriette has been researching this topic to bring food labelling to the menu's of Irish restaurants. Imagine a restaurant that you can visit who tells you exactly what you are eating so you can make the informed decision on what you would like to eat. This campaign is about making dining easier to all. Once healthpro have worked with your menu your customers will know the calorific value of each dish and also the allergen and lifestyle symbols associated with each dish. healthpro will also supply you with energy coding symbols to help to education the nation what that calorie content will mean to their day. Is the dish a snack, light meal, main meal or indulgence. It is healthpro's aim to give the power of choice to the nation.

Great News for Coeliac and Allergen Sufferers: healthpro brings food labeling to Ireland – 6, Jan, 2011
Increasingly, better health and nutrition is being promoted by various bodies as a means to disease prevention and the achievement of longer and more fulfilling lives for our population. As a result, many restaurant goers are now seeking accurate nutritional information on the food they order as their awareness of the implications of food choice develops. This is of particular importance for the coeliac, not only for reasons of general health, but also crucially for the ongoing successful management of their condition.
healthpro enables restaurants and food outlets of all kinds to offer comprehensive nutritional information to their customers that is straightforward and easy to understand. When individuals with dietary or lifestyle requirements chose to eat in establishments endorsed by healthpro, they can make instant, well informed decisions, and feel safe in the knowledge that all dishes have been fully analysed by qualified healthpro dietitians.
healthpro’s most recent achievement comes from work done with bay restaurant in Clontarf. Here we preformed a full audit of all dishes and drinks on their menu and designed a uniquely user-friendly method of presenting the results to customers. The bay menu now features 13 different allergen and lifestyle color coded symbols with each menu item assigned an appropriate visual description that can be easily referenced to a table below. These symbols highlight, for example, a dish as wheat-free, gluten free, coeliac friendly, or containing allergens such as nuts or crustaceans.
All dishes are also given a meal category status. Using the healthpro logo we classified dishes according to their calorific value and broke them down into the following; a snack, light meal, main meal or an indulgence. This again facilitates consumers in making informed and smart choices.
healthpro has also worked closely with Richard Beshoff of Beshoff Bros. fish and chip chain in recent months. Here, perhaps uniquely in this country, we have helped create exclusively coeliac friendly meals. In order to ensure that these meals are strictly gluten-free, rigorous guidelines and protocols relating to the selection, preparation and cooking of foods were implemented. These continue to be monitored by healthpro on an on-going basis. Throughout all Beshoff Bros. restaurants separate oil and fryers are used to produce their coeliac-friendly chips and battered fish, and they ensure that all gluten-containing produce is kept a regulated distance from this area.
If you know of a restaurant in your area that would like to become part of the healthpro community, have their menu audited so they can provide their customers with the essential information so they can an informed decision when ordering a meal then contact the healthpro team today
